World-class expertise in how to treat eating disorders in young people

We understand that everyone is different and there are lots of different pathways to developing an eating disorder. Many experts believe eating disorders are a type of coping mechanism, where people utilise their control over food to deal with emotions and other situations.

They are characterised by disordered attitudes and behaviours. This results in compulsions that control your day-to-day activities. Unhealthy habits include overeating, undereating, extreme overexercising, and obsessing over your weight or body type. Our specialists have enabled hundreds of young people to overcome their eating disorders by identifying the underlying causes and various contributing factors which may have exacerbated their condition.

This has been achieved through an integrated approach to treatment that considers our patients' physical health needs and their psychological well-being and recognises the importance of family support.

Who can benefit from eating disorder treatment at Schoen Clinic Chelsea?

Our private outpatient clinic for eating disorders is recommended when young people and their families require expert help in order to overcome the impact of disordered eating.

This might be at the start of an eating disorder or later on in the journey when specialist help can be used to break bad habits that families have struggled with for some time.

ABOUT PRIVATE EATING DISORDER CLINICS

Eating disorders do not discriminate. They can happen to anyone regardless of age, gender, religious belief or sexual orientation. Whilst they most commonly present during adolescence and affect more women than men, research suggests that eating disorders also disproportionately affect members of the LGBT community.

Our private one-to-one therapy appointments are available for children and young people (6-17 years) experiencing disordered eating or confirmed eating disorders.

Referrals will be accepted from GPs, independent Psychiatrists, Psychologists and CAMHS professionals.

On receipt of the referral for outpatient treatment, our team will contact the referrer to provide information on assessment and treatment options and clarify the funding pathway.

PRIVATE EATING DISORDER ASSESSMENTS

Eating disorder treatment assessments in London

We offer bespoke outpatient treatment packages for children and teens which start with an assessment with one of our specialists at Schoen Clinic Chelsea.

An assessment with a Consultant Psychiatrist can be arranged if the diagnosis is unclear or there is a requirement for medical oversight.

All patients coming into outpatient services will have a full assessment (including a risk assessment), formulation and treatment plan completed prior to starting treatment and goals/expectations regarding weight will be clear.

The assessment includes finding out what treatment, if any, the young person has had prior to the assessment and what support is currently available to them. If the client is already in contact with a community eating disorders service, Schoen Clinic will liaise with them and joint working can be offered as part of the package of care. In this case, the initial care plan will specify whether medical responsibility will rest with the GP, the community Psychiatrist or a Schoen Clinic Psychiatrist.

The specialist eating disorders clinician will discuss and agree on the treatment plan with the Clinical Manager or Pathway Lead before the treatment package is discussed with the client.

An outpatient assessment form will be completed, together with a risk assessment and an agreement on the treatment plan.

What treatments will be offered at the private eating disorders clinic?

Our award-winning team of leading eating disorder specialists at Schoen Clinic Chelsea work together as a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive, holistic treatment for a range of eating disorders.

Outpatient care management

There will be a Schoen Clinic Chelsea multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting once a week which all members of the team attend.

Treatment packages will be agreed upon for an initial 8-week period. After 8 weeks, we will review the treatment to ascertain if a further 12 weeks is recommended or if the patient will be discharged. Further reviews will be carried out every 12 weeks. Letters will be sent to GPs following the initial assessment, after the initial 8-week review and then every 12 weeks, unless treatment or risk status changes in between reviews.

If there are concerns that a patient isn't progressing, the Consultant Psychiatrist will carry out a review of the care and treatment should be arranged.

PARENT FEEDBACK - SEPTEMBER 2022

"The team at Schoen Chelsea have been supporting our teen since February 2022, and we feel immensely lucky to have found them. We sadly found there was no treatment locally that would be available urgently to us, so we decided to travel away from home for the day programme.

The MDT approach and treatment offered have been of great benefit, professional, kind, holistic and hopeful. Dr Hugo (psychiatrist) is very experienced and skilled and our child has been able to develop trust and confidence in the team who have helped us all during very difficult times."
