About Dr Joan Brunton

Qualifications

BSc, MBBS, MRCPsych

Dr Joan Brunton qualified in medicine from Guys’ and St Thomas’ Medical School in 1994 where she also gained an intercalacted BSc in Psychology at UCL in 1991. She completed core training in Psychiatry on the St George’s rotation and gained her MRCPsych in 1999. She then went on to carry out research in Eating Disorders at St George’s Medical School and completed her Higher Training as a Lecturer there.


Dr Brunton contributed to the work on the now much used SCOFF questionnaire and has a number of publications looking at reproductive and bone health in eating disorders. She also has an interest in how personality affects development of certain disorders and has researched this in students. She has presented work at a number of international conferences.


Dr Brunton has been a consultant in Adult Eating Disorders in both the NHS and private sector since 2005. She set up a Day Hospital at St George’s and also developed community treatment programmes there. Since 2012, she has run specialist inpatient units at St George’s and then Roehampton Priory working with highly complex patients.


Alongside her eating disorder work, Dr Brunton has maintained a small private practice in general adult psychiatry. She has a particular interest in working therapeutically with patients suffering from a range of disorders including, anxiety, relationship problems and depression. She has also supported women who have struggled to conceive and those who have struggled with mental health issues during their pregnancies.


Dr Brunton is trained in several therapeutic models including CBT, MANTRA, family carer skills and MBT whilst also using medication as and when necessary. 


She enjoys the crossover of physical and mental health aiming to work holistically to incorporate psychological and physical approaches for the individual.


New self-funding initial appointment - £650

Dr Brunton welcomes self-funding patients to her Schoen Clinic Chelsea practice, she does not currently provide private medical insurance-funded appointments.
