Dr Hazel Fernandes is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at Schoen Clinic Chelsea in London specialising in treating eating disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders and mental health conditions.

She graduated with a Medical Degree from Goa Medical College, the oldest medical school in Asia, founded by the Portuguese. Dr Fernandes initially completed her postgraduate training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and practised in this speciality in Ireland.

Her decision to pursue Psychiatry was influenced by her growing interest in maternal mental health, particularly the prenatal, antenatal, and postnatal influences on the mental health of both mother and child. Dr Fernandes successfully applied to the Trinity College Dublin Psychiatry Training Scheme in Ireland, where she completed her training in Psychiatry.

Dr Fernandes developed a keen interest in Child Psychiatry, spending two years with the Paediatric Liaison Mental Health Service at Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street, Dublin. This experience facilitated her pursuit of specialist training in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Her comprehensive training in General Psychiatry included work in Eating Disorders, General Adult Psychiatry, Learning Disability, Drugs & Addiction, Community CAMHS, Paediatric Liaison Mental Health, and Emergency Medicine.

Her training in Child & Adolescent Services involved extensive work in acute Paediatrics Mental Health Services, collaborating with Paediatricians and Allied Medical Health Professionals in Community, Day Hospital, and Inpatient services for children.

Dr Fernandes holds a Master’s degree in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and has completed Infant Mental Health training through a Special Interest Project and the Tavistock, UK. Additionally, she has received training in Family-Based Treatment and Adolescent-Focused Therapy in Eating Disorders through the Training Institute for Child & Adolescent Eating Disorders in Chicago.

Upon completing her training, Dr Fernandes worked as a Consultant in Paediatric Liaison Mental Health Service at one of Ireland's busiest acute paediatric hospitals. There, she managed eating disorders alongside paediatric medicine staff and addressed the neurodevelopmental mental health needs of children attending the hospital. She also handled acute and chronic mental health disorders in children through outpatient and emergency services.

Dr Fernandes was appointed to the Consultant post in the 16-bed inpatient CAMHS Unit of the Hertfordshire Partnership Foundation NHS Trust, an outstanding Trust, where she managed eating disorders among other acute mental health admissions. She later served as a Consultant for the looked after children and in generic CAMHS in the North London Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust.

In her role at Schoen Clinic Chelsea, Dr Fernandes sees children and teens with eating disorders, offers neurodevelopmental and generic CAMHS assessments and is trained in Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule–Generic (ADOS-G).

She is passionate about working with children and families in a multidisciplinary setting, which she believes is key to managing and preventing the mental health burden for both children and their families. Dr Fernandes emphasises the importance of collaboration with educational institutions and believes in addressing individual, family, medical, and environmental factors to facilitate progress during relapse and recovery.
