David Sweetnam

Consultant Knee Surgeon

MBBS FRCS FRCS (Orth) DIPSPORTSMED

Mr David Sweetnam is a private Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in London specialising in knee conditions. Having won The Fitton Prize in Orthopaedic Surgery on leaving Medical School, Mr Sweetnam qualified as a doctor in 1987 from the Middlesex Hospital Medical School, University College London. Subsequent to that he underwent orthopaedic training at The Royal United Hospital in Bath and was later appointed to The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Registrar Training Scheme.

Having gained his orthopaedic specialist qualification in 1995, he subsequently undertook a specialist fellowship in Australia, dealing predominantly with joint replacements and sports injuries. He took up the post of Orthopaedic Consultant at Whittington Hospital in February 1998 and continues to practise general orthopaedic surgery within this busy department.

Despite the fact that Mr Sweetnam is at the very forefront of innovative solutions, including research into cartilage cell regrowth techniques as well as minimally invasive techniques, he strongly advocates a non-surgical approach to knee pathology believing that most patients with knee conditions can be treated conservatively, and can often be managed very successfully without the need for surgery.

In cases where surgery is unavoidable, where conservative treatments have not been successful, then Mr Sweetnam is a highly experienced and specialised technician. Mr Sweetnam has over thirty years NHS experience, with twenty years as a Senior Consultant, ten of which as the Clinical Lead in a busy orthopaedic department.

Mr Sweetnam is internationally recognised with a large word-of-mouth private practice comprising high-profile figures in the world of finance, media, politics, and sports. In addition to treating high-level sportsmen and women, Mr Sweetnam recently chaired ‘The Future of Football Medicine’ at Camp Nou, Barcelona, organised in association with FIFA and supported by FC Barcelona. He also has the privilege of looking after elite servicemen as well as other Army and RAF personnel for which he has recently been honoured.

As well as his clinical practice he has developed one of the biggest medico-legal practices in London. Alongside patient care, Mr Sweetnam is actively involved in surgical education as a course coordinator, a lecturer for The Royal College of Surgeons and also an examiner. He is also currently involved in developing best practices as a key member of the Committee ‘Realigning Health Services in London’, part of the North Central London Orthopaedic Review Group and author of many chapters including a number on the subject of gaining informed patient consent. Mr Sweetnam is also Chairman of The Newman Foundation a large medical charity supporting medical research projects and other medically related charitable endeavours.

Mr Sweetnam serves in a medical advisory role for the wider INEOS sports portfolio.
